Les Peupliers Loire sits at the heart of one of France’s most extraordinary wine regions — on the border between Anjou-Saumur and Touraine, with over 2,400 wine growers within easy reach. Whether you arrive as a committed wine enthusiast or simply someone who enjoys a good glass with dinner, the vineyards of this region will be one of the highlights of your stay. Many producers welcome visitors for guided cellar tours and tastings, often in dramatic cave settings carved directly into the tuffeau limestone. Crémant de Loire & Saumur Sparkling Wines
If you arrive knowing nothing else about Loire wines, leave knowing this: the sparkling wines produced around Saumur are among the finest in France, and exceptional value compared to Champagne.
Crémant de Loire undergoes the same secondary bottle fermentation as Champagne — the méthode traditionnelle — with Chenin Blanc giving the wines their characteristic freshness: apple, quince, a touch of honey, and a fine, persistent mousse. The vast underground caves beneath Saumur, quarried centuries ago to build the châteaux above ground, provide perfect natural cellars where bottles mature slowly and develop real complexity.
Louis de Grenelle, based in Saumur, is one of the region’s most celebrated sparkling wine houses and well worth a visit — their cave tours are fascinating and the tastings excellent. Gratien & Meyer is another outstanding producer in Saumur offering cellar visits. If you enjoy art, Ackerman has incredible sculptures in their caves, adding an extra dimension to your wine tasting.
Saumur Blanc — Chenin Blanc at Its Best
The white wines of Saumur are frequently made from Chenin Blanc on the distinctive tuffeau soils. They are dry, mineral, and beautifully fresh — citrus, pear, white flowers, and a long clean finish. They age remarkably well and represent some of the best-value white wines in France. Both Château de Targé and Château de Parnay produce excellent examples available to taste on a visit.
Rosé
The rosés of the Loire Valley are among the most versatile and food-friendly in France — fresh, fruit-driven, and elegantly dry. The Cabernet Franc grape that dominates this stretch of the river produces rosés of real character: strawberry, raspberry, and a subtle floral note, with a clean, refreshing finish quite different from the richer rosés of Provence.
Gatien Dézé, just a short drive from Les Peupliers Loire, is a beautifully situated family domaine producing excellent Saumur rosé alongside their reds and whites. A visit here is one of the easiest and most rewarding wine stops from the property.
Saumur-Champigny — The Great Red of the Region
Saumur-Champigny is made predominantly from Cabernet Franc grown on sandy soils over the chalky tuffeau, these are fruit-forward, elegant reds — raspberry, redcurrant, cherry, violet, and a touch of spice — lighter and more refined than many Bordeaux-style wines, yet capable of ageing beautifully.
The appellation stretches directly along the Loire between Saumur and Montsoreau, passing through the villages of Parnay, Souzay-Champigny, Turquant, and Dampierre-sur-Loire — all a short drive or gentle cycle from Les Peupliers Loire.
Château de Targé, in Parnay, is one of our personal favourites — a family-run estate producing outstanding Saumur-Champigny and Saumur Blanc from organically farmed vines, with wonderful tastings available in an authentic setting.
Chinon
Chinon produces what many consider the most complete expression of Cabernet Franc in the Loire — structured and mineral, with crystalline red fruit, fine tannins, and a distinctive earthy depth. The style varies meaningfully with the soil: gravelly soils near the Vienne river yield lighter, more aromatic wines, while the tuffeau hillsides produce richer, spicier bottles that reward patience in the cellar. Chinon also produces a small quantity of dry Chenin Blanc white wine that is well worth seeking out.
The town itself — with its dramatic medieval fortress — is under 30 minutes’ drive from Les Peupliers and pairs beautifully with a vineyard visit.
Bourgueil & Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil
On the north bank of the Loire, Bourgueil and its smaller neighbour Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil produce Cabernet Franc reds and rosés of real distinction — crisp, spiced, and refreshing, with the gravelly riverside soils producing lighter styles and the tuffeau hillsides giving more structured, age-worthy wines.
Both appellations are around 10-15 minutes by car or an easy cycle on our e-bikes. One of our personal favourites is Domaine Frédéric Mabileau where you can sample their delicious wines whilst sitting in a relaxed garden setting and enjoy some light snacks or even have a meal at their restaurant Chez Odette.
Planning Your Wine Visits
Most local producers welcome visitors for tastings and cellar tours, though booking ahead is advisable to ensure the best experience. Many of the vineyards closest to us are reachable by e-bike along quiet country roads and cycling through the vines is one of the most memorable things you can do in this region.
